| The American public school system is a disaster and has been since the 1970s, when three things happened:
* Teachers unions took over
* Politically correctness and the Leftist agenda infiltrated the education system
* In the 1970s, the conservatives ceded the school boards in every state to the Left, because conservatives “had jobs, had families, and were just too busy to sit on a board”......ASSININE mistake!
Take a thorough look at the problems facing every school district in the country. They can be traced to two sources:
* The Department of Education, which should be abolished
* Teachers’ Unions, which should be abolished
The reason the unions must go is because they protect bad teachers. Look at these statistics, only 1 teacher in 2500 teachers ever lose their accreditation. Compare that to 1 doctor in 57 doctors or 1 lawer in 97 lawyers who lose their professional licenses for one reason or another (including gross incompetence).
Charter schools work much better than public ones because the teachers there are not unionized, so bad teachers can actually be fired, and good teachers can receive merit pay for high performance (merit pay is NOT allowed in the unionized public schools).
One of the goals of the Tea Party movement should be to destroy the labor unions. All of them.
They are the single greatest reason the public school system is such a disaster.
What think you? |

| I disagree with your entire argument!
The reason public schools don't work is the same reason social security and medicare don't work: Socialism doesn't work! And the solution is quite simple: Privatize schooling.
Few American's understand what it means to privatize something. It means to allow the market to dictate not only the price of a commodity, but even whether or not that commodity deserves to exist. Private school as it exists now, and even home schooling, is not truly privatized because one is forced by government to purchase this service.
To privatize the school system is to repeal the law that makes it mandatory for certain aged persons to attend. These mandatory provisions were, like all things run by government, slowly implemented. It was in fact the labor unions who pushed for this law to prevent teens from taking low paying, entry level jobs.
I am not suggesting children shouldn't be educated. I'm saying that free people should have a choice as to the type of education to provide for their own children. The argument most often given against freedom in education is, "But what about the poor?" and I say it sucks to be be poor and so one should strive to not be.
This includes not making babies until one is prepared to care for them. It mean not being forced to sit in a room full of dolts 5 days a week for 12 years when you could be out getting an education. It means not coasting through life waiting for someone else to care for you, and it means working when you'd rather play, and saving when you'd rather spend.
People who want a strong nanny government to take care of their every need should move to Holland or Canada. The people there all want to live under socialism and don't mind that 75% of their earnings go to government. But people who tout their country as being the land of the free and the home of the brave need to grow a set of "braveries" and demand freedom. |

Yeah, well I'm glad you agree, but thing is, this ain't a democrat problem. Republicans are equally guilty of willful ignorance, and playing the blame game is what I'm mainly disagreeing with. Like you, I am almost as old as dirt, and I've seen this same scene play out again and again. Every 2-4 years people get really upset about how government is treating them, and they "clean house" and nothing really changes for the better. We just get more and more expensive, useless, bureaucracies that suck away our wealth and that perpetuate themselves via unions and laws, lobbying and appointments. No matter which side of the coin is voted into office, the bureaucrats stay hired. How many bureaucracies will this group of clowns you voted in last time shut down? I'm better the answer is zero. |
