He also stated that the Catholic Church would welcome space aliens and would be happy to baptize them, and that science and religion could exist together. Consolmagno, a Vatican astronomer from Detroit, Michigan, is in charge of Pope Benedict's collection of meteorites. He works at Castel Gandolfo (Vatican City State) which is in the center of Italy and the summer home of the Pope. He wrote more than a hundred papers and books and became interested in astronomy by reading science fiction.

He eschews the "intelligent design" theory of theology and says it brings God down to the pagan level as a god of thunder and lightning. "God is bigger than just humanity. God is also the god of angels," he said. "Any entity - no matter how many tentacles it has - has a soul."
